Modern Design Meets Vermont Tradition
This architectural gem, tucked in the woods of Richmond, Vermont, perfectly embodies the balance between modern design and classic Vermont charm. The project’s exceptional detailing, sustainable focus, and connection to its natural surroundings have earned it the prestigious AIA Vermont 2023 Honor Award in the Single Family Residential category
A Home Designed for Generations
Woodlands is a multi-generational home designed by Jeff McBride of Sidehill Design Studio and constructed by Reap Construction to provide both communal and private spaces for its residents. The residence is composed of three gables, each thoughtfully arranged to create harmonious living areas and frame the outdoor spaces. The minimalist modern detailing, from the cedar-clad exterior to the standing seam metal roof, reflects a sophisticated simplicity that resonates with the surrounding forest.
Sustainability at the Forefront
One of the most exciting aspects of Woodlands is its commitment to sustainability. This home is deeply connected to its forest setting and strives to minimize its environmental impact. The house uses no fossil fuels and operates entirely on electric power, boasting a HERS Index Score of 2, and is equipped with a 15 kW solar array. By avoiding fossil fuels and integrating energy-efficient systems like cold climate heat pumps and hybrid electric hot water heaters, Woodlands sets a high standard for environmentally conscious living.
Connecting Indoors and Outdoors
The home’s floor-to-ceiling windows and doors (Marvin Ultimate Collection) from Windows & Doors By Brownell are a standout feature, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor environments. These expansive windows not only flood the interior with natural light but also create a strong connection between the inhabitants and the lush forest outside. The outdoor living spaces, including patios and a hot tub area, invite residents to engage with nature year-round.
Rooted in Vermont’s Natural Beauty
Built on a previously developed site, Woodlands was designed to integrate into its surroundings with minimal environmental impact. The careful siting of the house connects it to existing trails, a barn, and gardens, preserving the natural beauty of the area. The result is a home that feels both timeless and modern, providing a peaceful retreat for its residents while remaining deeply rooted in the Vermont landscape.
